Diplomacy Behind The JNNURM buses - The Semi Low Floor Buses - Luxury Buses

Buses are an important means of Transportation in our day to day life. Do you know that bus transportation can create a political revolution? yes it is possible......They can Create FEAR amidst the Government. Buses take up over 90% of public transport in Indian cities and serve as a cheap and convenient mode of transport for all classes of society.

Now let us get into a little history of the bus transportation in TamilNadu.

Prior to 1996

Until 1996, the transport services are bifurcated and were undertaken by 21 different transport corporations to cater different parts of the state. Each transport corporation were named after a Leader/notable personality in the state. Later during 1997,the number of transport corporations are reduced and those 21 different transport corporations were clubbed to form just 6 transport corporations (Excluding MTC & SETC)

This time, all the leader's names were replaced with "TamilNadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC)" along with a division Name. Source;(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TNSTC)

Let us come back to our topic ....

From 1995 till 2001 the minimum cost in these buses were just 70 paisa. After that the minimum cost was raised to 2.00 Rupees.

The fuel price hike is shown in the graph as follows...

We will be very surprised to know that though the prices of Fuel rose through the decade, the Bus Fare remained the same.Though a few may state it as the government's leaniance towards the people.....It is not so.

To be Frank it may be said as the governments' FEAR, as raising the bus fare may lead to the fall of their empire.

Because Throughout the Decade the price kept on increasing and yet the fare was not raised and the transport corporations suffered a serious loss because of this issue.

               So what is the solution?

They diplomatically came up with the idea of the Semi Low Floor Buses so that the fare could be raised without any oppositions,BUT people first initially refused to accept these buses .The transport corporations had a new problem now.The buses had less income.

so what to do next??? They started to reduce the count of the usual buses in the routes and people would wait and wait and finally they decided to get into these buses.

Thus they achieved what they wanted.

DRAWBACKS

The above Buses were light in their construction so had a good mileage from 8 to 10 kms/ltr.

While these buses are Heavy in their construction and have a mileage of roughly 3 to 6 kms/ltr  creating a serious loss for the government.

LIFETIME:

The buses can have a maximum Life Tenure of 10-12 years approximately .Now most of the above old buses are sent for scraps and the frequency of the new Costlier buses has increased and people delibrately have started to accept them.

Though these Buses offer a comfortable travel, the fuel overhead is too high to be accepted.

We need to find an alternate Solution for mass public transportation.

Yours Friendly,

Mohanram.
